- Description
- In this article, I will focus on two areas of biblical studies since the 1990s that operate with such a limited horizon: literary readings and postcolonial criticism. Needless to say these are very broad categories, and I will not be able to address them all in depth nor cover all of the literature. What I hope to do is address the ways in which these areas have produced various ideologies of reading, which have managed to focus the debates on individual readers, identity formation, and difference. After arguing that this concept of self is constituent of capitalism, and thus cannot provide any sense of collective opposition, I will shift to the biblical text in the third and final section. The focus on the text is an attempt to move beyond the individual subject, while retaining the emphasis on the socioeconomic context.
